Tips to Stay Healthy While Traveling

The world today isn’t the same world it was this time last year, or even a few months ago. Now that we have seen first hand how quickly a virus like COVID-19 can spread and change our lifestyle and how we travel, it’s important to practice the little things while traveling to keep yourself and those around you healthy.

Wash Your Hands

Washing your hands in warm soapy water should always be your first option. If you are not near a sink there are others on the go options to keep you clean:
Sanitizer Wipes: Keep a stash of anti-bacterial sanitizer wipes in your bag. They are easy to stash in a pocket and get through airport security. I like sanitizer wipes because they can also remove sticky messes and dirt from your hands. They are also good for wiping down armrests, tray tables, door handles, and even the remote control in your hotel room.

Liquid Hand Sanitizer: Good to have in your purse or bag for when your hands need a quick sanitize like after you use an elevator or get off a roller coaster. Remember that liquid sanitizer is not good for removing solid particles off your hands, like sticky food debris.
*hand sanitizers may not get rid of all germs. It’s a good idea to read the sanitizer label to get all the information. Washing your hands is almost always the best bet.

Stay Hydrated

Traveling can be hard on your body, especially during a long flight in a dry airplane. Make sure you drink plenty of liquid on your flight. I like to carry a reusable water bottle with me when I am traveling. I know it’s annoying to use public restrooms, but it’s also annoying to way too much for water and to become dehydrated while traveling/sight-seeing. Trust me, your body (and wallet) will thank you.

Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep can be hard while traveling, but it’s necessary. With time changes, extra eating, and walking, your body needs to recoup in order to get up and do it all over again the next day. I know my body functions best on 6-7 hours of sleep. Listen to your body and get the rest you need.

Eating Mindfully

It’s really easy to go into “vacation mode” when it comes to your diet. Pace yourself with the sugary treats and remember to eat fruits and veggies. It is easy to lose control, especially on a longer trip your diet can end up spiraling out of control…(ahem, 2 desserts a day). Listen to your body and make sure you are giving it the nutrition it needs and deserves to keep you regular and going.

Basic First Aid

It’s a good idea to keep some basic first aid items on hand at all times either in your purse or bag. I like to keep a stock of band-aides, alcohol wipes, Tylenol, and sunscreen with me at all times when I am out and about. I keep a bigger stock of items in my luggage and replenish my supply as needed.

Relax

Traveling can be hard on your body and your mind. Cut yourself some slack and enjoy your travels. You may not be able to see everything in one day or squeeze it all in to your trip, but that’s okay. Make a list of all of your “musts” and anything extra is icing on the cake. Sometimes the best parts of your trip will be the unplanned moments.
